Located at the far end of Chaleur Bay at the mouth of the Restigouche River lies an important site for both Canadian and North American history. The Battle of the Restigouche took place in 1760 and was the last naval battle between England and France over North America.
Today, this National Historic Site of Canada provides visitors with first hand history of the battle and life during the mid 1700s. Vestiges of the frigate The Machault are currently on display including a collection of artifacts retrieved from the wreck. One of the more popular attractions at the Battle of the Restigouche Historic Site is the loading of one of the cannons recovered from The Machault.
In addition, a scenic lookout has been created which provides visitors with a magnificent view out over the Restigouche River and the site of the historic battle.
