Canadian Ski Museum
Then Canadian Ski Museum was founded in Ottawa, Ontario in 1971 by a group of ski enthusiasts. In 1975 the Museum was incorporated under federal law. Upon the museum's opening, Herman 'Jackrabbit' Smith-Johannsen acted as the Patron of the Canadian Ski Museum, and donated several of his unique and historical possessions to the collections. The Museum is currently located in the ‘Trailhead’ building on Scott Street in Ottawa, Ontario.
The priceless collection of artifacts and archival holdings has continued to expand and with them the presentation of displays and stories about the history of skiing in Canada has increased. The collections are a mix of many skiing related items, from skis, boots, poles, bindings, clothing, waxes, pins, badges to the photographs, posters, scrapbooks, films, videos, books, newsletters, programs and other historical documents, all donated by skiers to ensure that Canada’s skiing past is preserved for all time. The Museum not only collects the material and artifacts related to skiing it it’s many forms, but also the stories and legends associated with the early days of skiing.
In 1982 the Canadian Ski Museum established the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame, which honors the pioneers, competitors, builders and industry personnel that have contributed significantly to Canada’s skiing/snowboarding heritage.
