Fort Mississauga is located along the shores of Lake Ontario, not far from the Niagara River in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. Built as an emergency field fortification, Fort Mississauga is the only example of a star shaped earthwork in Canada. Construction begun during the War of 1812 and the fort assisted the British and Canadians defend the Niagara frontier against the American army in 1814. Before the fort was built, the site was used by many Native American tribes: the Neutral (15th century); Seneca (late 17th century); and Mississauga (18th century).
Situated on the grounds of the Niagara-on-the-Lake Golf Club, Fort Mississauga can be accessed by a pedestrian trail which begins at the corner of Simcoe and Front Streets. Fort Mississauga offers visitors terrific views of Lake Ontario and Fort Niagara across the river in Youngstown, New York.
