Fort St. Joseph
Fort St. Joseph is a National Historic Site of Canada located on St. Joseph Island - 45km south of Sault Ste. Marie. Fort St. Joseph showcases the alliance that existed between the First Nations peoples of the Western Great Lakes region and the British during the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. Built in 1796, Fort St. Joseph was the most westerly frontier outpost in British North America.
Visitors to this site can stroll the ruins, follow nature trails, and learn more about the Fort and surrounding region from the Visitor Centre exhibits. In addition to the fort, the site contains a number of archaeological features that tie in with the European and Aboriginal life over 200 years ago.
On display are many of the artifacts recovered from the region including military uniforms, furs, tools, and more.
