This original British military fort, built during the war of 1812, was once used to defend the St. Lawrence River shipping route between Kingston and Montreal. In 1838, the fort was re-built and returned to service to help prevent invasion from the United States. Today, Fort Wellington is a National Historic Site of Canada and is open to the public as a way to preserve it's history and educate future generations about the importance of protecting the region throughout the early 1800s. Self-guided tours of the fort are enhanced by guides in period costumes. Visitor centre with orientation video, exhibits and gift shop.
