The present Citadel is the fourth in a series of forts to occupy the hill overlooking Halifax harbour since 1749. Completed in 1856, the current Citadel is an excellent example of 19th-century bastion fortification and played an important role as a naval station in the British Empire. The Citadel was used by the British Army until 1906 and then by the Canadian Forces during the First and Second World Wars.
The fort was designated as a National Historic Site in 1951. Today, the Citadel is operated by Parks Canada and is recognized as one of the most important historic sites in Canada.
