Nancy Island is located in the Wasaga Beach area and is one of the region's little-known secrets. Named after a British Schooner, The Nancy, the Island is rich with history and artifacts and is a large tourist attraction for the area.
The Nancy was a fur trading ship that was destroyed in battle on August 14, 1814 while sailing on the Nottawasaga River. The crew of The Nancy was unable to defend the ship against the American forces which easily outnumbered them. Today, the hull of the Nancy which was built in 1789 is currently on display.
During the spring, summer, and fall tourist season, Nancy Island park staff offer visitors a tour of the site as well as live cannon and musket demonstrations. In addition, the site is home to a 19th century replica lighthouse as well as an award wining video presentation about the crew of The Nancy and the ships fate.
