Niagara River Recreational Trail
The Niagara River Recreation Trail is a paved path that winds 53 kilometers along the Canadian side of the Niagara River. The well marked trail begins at Fort George in Niagara-on-the-Lake and extends to Anger Street in the north end of the Town of Fort Erie. A very popular destination for hikers and bikers, the trail divides into four sections, each with its own unique history and beautiful scenery.
On average, it takes 1 to 2 hours to bike through each of these sections:
(1) Niagara-on-the-Lake to Queenston
(2) Queenston to the Whirlpool Aero Car
(3) Chippawa to Black Creek
(4) Black Creek to Fort Erie
The Niagara River Recreation Trail is full of history. During the war of 1812, British soldiers and local militia travelled the very same trail in attempts to stop US invaders from across the river. This very history is well described on over 100 monuments and plaques that exist along the Trail.
