Located in the Greater Victoria region, the Victoria Butterfly Gardens is a popular tourist attraction. The facility is home to over 3000 specimens from over 50 species of butterflies and moths that live, fly, eat, and reproduce freely within the indoor facility.
The Victoria Butterfly Gardens is an indoor, 12,000 square foot simulated rainforest with temperature, light, and humidity controlled by special computers. The environment easily sustains the habitat that consists of over 250 species of tropical plants including carnivorous species.
Of special interest is the nursery window where visitors are able to experience the emergence of butterflies from the chrysalis at a rate of about 500-700 butterflies per week. The butterflies are captive-bred and shipped from Malaysia, Costa Rica, and London.
