The Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site of Canada was once the world's longest lock. Built in 1895, it was the first to operate using electricity and the last link in an all-Canadian navigational chain from the Atlantic to Lake Superior. Today the Canal offers visitors a great spot for recreational boat watching, picnicking, hiking, and cycling. The Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site of Canada supports the Attikamek Trail which spans 2.2km across the lock gates on South St. Marys Island as well as fat bike rentals to explore the trails with.
